PLAZA ILLA CORSINI

PLAZA ILLA CORSINI

PLAZA ILLA CORSINI
Tarragona

Our goal was to create a space of nature and shade in the Corsini square in Tarragona. To create a breathing space, a green area in the middle of a dense urban fabric, a place to sit, a place to meet.

The project will be located southeast of the square, facing the market. We placed it in such a way that the umbraculum and its vegetation can be seen from the surrounding streets, introducing nature also in the environment of this urban void and to connect the green with the rest of the city.

We want to give this architecture a monumental character through the small scale and the deliberate symmetry that honors this element of social encounter.

The combination of nature and a structure that wants to merge with the air, we create a shaded green space. The plants float thanks to a support structure and let sunlight fall through the wisteria, creating a very pleasant atmosphere on the large concrete bench.

Beyond sitting in the shade of the greenery on a hot day, enjoying the sea breeze and the smell of the alder, these benches seek to create relational spaces for their users. Their shape facilitates conversation and also refers to the Roman Cardo and Decumanus, while their color and texture, as a restrained reinterpretation, refers to the sandstone of the remains of the roman city of Tarraco. The metal was to have a nuance that did not speak of modernity, but was more about integration with history.

The square will be refreshed and revitalized. Giving the buildings on the site a new garden, as well as offering people a quiet place amidst the hustle and bustle of the city.

We have sought to the limit that the protagonists of this work are people, history and nature.
